SpeakUP - Oppose SB 183, the "Billboard Bill"

What is SB 183 and why are citizens are against the bill?

Senate Bill 183 intends to relax billboard regulations along NC highways, meaning digital and tri-vision billboards every 1,500 feet.

  • The bill would override LOCAL sign regulations and tree cutting ordinances on state/federal roads. And...
  • Allows a billboard to be placed every 1,500 feet, on both sides, of any interstate or primary highway
  • Provides for billboard owners to ignore local tree maintenance ordinances
  • Increases the clear-cut area around a billboard installation by 60%.
  • Allows billboards already in violation of local law to be converted to blinking digital signs

Dear Triangle Members of the NC General Assembly,

I am a Triangle resident who is concerned by the long-term economic and environmental implications of SB 183, the Billboard Bill. I write today to ask you to please OPPOSE SB 183, legislation that will negatively impact our region's quality of life.  This legislation would override the desires of current local sign regulations of local govenrments.  And even if you approve of billboards, this legislation goes too far in permitting flashing and frequent billboards, and how many trees can be cut down around them.  Ultimately, existing residents and newcomers alike admire our region's scenic highways and roads, and lifting billboard standards will undermine the desirability of our community for future economic investment and growth.

I encourage you to please oppose Senate Bill 183!

Sincerely,
