1A Study Skills 9:00-12:00, July 19-22
One of the biggest challenges for an incoming high school student is the increased study requirements. Especially in High School, taking 8 classes simultaneously puts a premium on the ability to study efficiently and effectively. To assist with this transition, the WELL will be offering courses in high school-level study skills. The skills taught in this class include notebook organization, test preparation techniques, in-class note-taking strategies, and helpful hints on prioritization of homework. Students will practice these skills by creating notebook organization plans for various subjects, creating various types of flashcards, and taking notes on video lectures. The aim of the four day, twelve hour WELL Study Skills Summer Workshop is to help students effectively tackle the challenges of homework and test preparation at a high school level.--PRoyal
1B Link2Learn 1:00-4:00, July 19-20
1C Link2Learn 1:00-4:00, July 21-22
A 2-day, 6-hour intergenerational workshop for students and their parent, grandparent or older family member (one student/one family member) to inspire and share life experiences in a meaningful way
Sharing Family News - A Newsletter or Blog
Students today have so much technology savvy that they are able to share with their elders. We have set up a time and place for this sharing to happen. Based on our successful model of one-on-one mentoring by students with senior citizens in our Link2Learn Program, this workshop will be a hands-on opportunity for students to work with a family member to teach them to use technology and together create a meaningful product.
They will share how to use Microsoft Word to create a family newsletter including inserting pictures, changing formatting, using Word Art, captions, clipart, bulleted lists, tables and more. Learn how to take digital pictures, scan old pictures, and even record sound.
If you want to try your hand at creating a family blog, you will learn how to set it up, add text, pictures, and even some sound. Additional support will be available, as needed, and a product will be created and shared with the group at the end of the workshop.
A student and an older relative should register together for this workshop.--KNoon
2A Managing a Heavy Reading Load 9:00-12:00, July 26-29
Students entering high-school can be easily overwhelmed by the heavy reading load, an abrupt change from what they may have experienced in middle school. This workshop will provide experience in reading with a purpose to help students master the essential content of information-rich texts. Participants will leave this workshop with reading strategies to manage their heavy workload and will master the content of several chapters in freshman-year textbooks, putting them a little ahead of the game when school begins.--SKillion
2B Healthy Cooking 1:00-4:00, July 26-29
Students: Interested in a career in the culinary arts? Parents: Would you like your student to be able to cook a healthy dinner for the family 3 nights a week? Then this workshop is for you. Participants will work with a nutritionist and 3 prominent Raleigh chefs, in their commercial kitchens, to develop their culinary knowledge and skill. The workshop will focus on nutrition, healthy approaches to cooking and will give participants hands-on experience in cooking 3 healthy meals.--JSmith, AGordon, ASalamanca, JBecker and others.
3A Geometry Preparation 9:00-12:00, August 2-3
3B Geometry Preparation 9:00-12:00, August 4-5
5D Geometry Preparation 1:00-4:00, August 18-19
Year after year, surveys show that the math class considered most difficult by high school students is geometry. However, the problem is not that geometry is unreasonably difficult; it simply demands a different set of skills than algebraic math. Whereas algebra focuses on calculations to determine an answer, geometry focuses on proofs wherein the answer is already known, but must be proven. This summer session will focus on providing the basic skills in logic and statement-justification that are vital in geometry. Many of the activities involved in this course will be practice math proofs, but to encourage interest in geometry and widen its potential applications, students will also apply the geometric proof format to contemporary logical and philosophical problems. These applications will help to answer the perennial question for students who are unhappy with math. "When will I use this in real life?" The aim of the two-day, six-hour WELL Geometry Prep Summer Workshop is to teach the unique set of skills required by geometry, while simultaneously applying geometric skills to real-world situations.--PRoyal
3C Digital Music 1:00-4:00, August 2-3
During the FL Studio workshop students will create a 3 to 5 minute song (instrumental) using readily available software. By the end of the workshop students will be familiar with patterns, sequencing, plug ins, and an overall understanding of typical song structure. Students will take a home a full-length song they have created on a compact disc.--TWhite
3D Graphic Design 1:00-4:00, August 4-5
This 2-day, 6-hour workshop focuses on image editing and creation. Participants in this class will learn how to manipulate and edit photographs using GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), an open source program available to anyone free of charge. In addition to simple tasks like resizing and cropping images, participants will also learn more complex skills like adding texture and blending photographs together. Participants will also create a stop-motion animation video--AClark, SWeeks-Jamieson
4A Algebra I Review 9:00-12:00, August 9-10
4B Algebra I Review 9:00-12:00, August 11-12
5C Algebra I Review 1:00-4:00, August 16-17
The curious format of the standard math track - with Geometry in between the two Algebras - has many justifications in terms of relative difficulty and logical flow of material, but it can lead to difficulties for students entering Algebra II after Geometry. Many students report difficulty recalling information learned as many as two years ago in the classroom. The Algebra I Review Forum works to ease this transition by giving a review of the basic concepts and key formulas of Algebra I. Students will regain a basic grounding in Algebra I concepts and gain a preview of some of the key concepts of Algebra II. This workshop will also focus particularly on word problems and other especially challenging parts of the Algebra I curriculum. The purpose of the two-day, six-hour Algebra I WELL Summer Workshop is to refresh students' memories of Algebra I in preparation for entering Algebra II in the fall.--PRoyal
4C SAT Preparation 1:00-4:00, August 9-12
The Holy Grail of college applications is a high SAT score. This score, measured by a 3 hour test, is given equivalent weight by many colleges to 3 years of high school classes. Fortunately, this test is not the impossible-to-study-for intelligence test that it was once claimed to be. Instead, the SAT merely requires specific types of knowledge and ways of thinking - which can be taught in a class. Students in the SAT Prep Summer Workshop will gain a familiarity with the nature and structure of the SAT through practice tests, online studying, and time trials to mimic the time constraints of the SAT.The SAT Prep course will include specific foci on the three sectors of the SAT - Mathematics, Reading, and Writing - as well as a practice essay, typically the most difficult part of the SAT.The aim of the four day, twelve hour SAT Prep WELL Summer Workshop is to prepare students for one of the most important tests given in high school through practice and test-taking strategies.--PRoyal
5A Applying to College 9:00-12:00, August 16-19
An overview of the college application process, a review of online resources, including The College Foundation of North Carolina's website, where students will either extablish or renew their accounts. Students will leave this workshop with a clear timeline of college application steps and a head-start on the process. Most useful for rising juniors and seniors.--SKillion
