WakeUP Presents Legislative Awards
Submitted by Caitlin Burke on Wed, 12/02/2009 - 2:35pm.
WakeUP Wake County awarded three Wake County legislators with leadership awards at its annual meeting Monday November 16. Representative Deborah Ross, Senator Josh Stein, and Senator Richard Stevens were honored for their hard work and dedication during the 2009 legislative session in passing two key quality growth planning bills.
Representative Ross and Senator Stevens were sponsors of HB 148, the Congestion Relief/Intermodal Transport Fund bill. The bill passed with strong support in August 2009, thanks in large part to the stewardship of Ross and Stevens. Its passage was an essential step in creating and funding a regional transportation system in the Triangle that will help relieve traffic congestion, reduce air pollution, and guide future growth in the area. Senator Stein sponsored S 1020, the Improve Upper Neuse Basin Water Quality bill, which also passed the General Assembly in August 2009. This bill will ensure action to clean up Falls Lake, including measures to help control runoff from development and incentives to encourage faster action by developers and municipalities to protect and restore water quality in the Lake. Stein recognized that, as the primary water supply for Raleigh and eastern Wake County, it is imperative that we protect Falls Lake, particularly as the area's population grows and threats from new development increase. WakeUP was proud to recognize these legislators for their leadership on behalf of Wake County. Remember that it's never too late for YOU to thank your elected officials for their contributions, and they appreciate hearing your thanks as much as your concerns!
