The results for the October 6th elections for Raleigh, Cary, and the Wake Board of Education are in.
Raleigh City Council
Mayor Charles Meeker was elected to his fifth term. Incumbents Mary-Ann Baldwin and Russ Stephenson were re-elected as the Council's At-Large representatives. Nancy McFarlane was re-elected to District A, as was Thomas Crowder to District D. Bonner Gaylord defeated Waheed Haq to replace Philip Isley in District E. John Odom defeated Rodger Koopman in District B, the election's only upset, which could change the dynamic on the City Council. For more information see coverage in the News & Observer.
Cary Town Council
Incumbent Julie Robison won the At-Large seat and Jack Smith was re-elected to District C. However, the race for District A remains undecided. Incumbent Jennifer Robinson is neck-in-neck with challenger Lori Bush. Election officials will now count the provisional ballots, and if that doesn't put Robinson over the 50% mark, there will be a runoff election on November 3. Growth is a significant issue in District A, so Cary voters make sure you head back to the polls on Nov 3 in the event of a runoff! For more information see the N&O here and here.
Wake Board of Education
Wake County's public school system could be headed for significant change following the election, which put three critics of the diversity policy, year round schools, and other policies on the Board, with the potential for a fourth in District 2 where a runoff is likely. Opponents of the status quo turned out to vote, evident in the sweeping victories. With this, Wake County's nationally recognized diversity policy hangs by a thread. For more information, read the story in the N&O and coverage by the Wake Education Partnership.
Don't forget: any runoff elections as well as elections for Angier, Apex, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Holly Springs, Knightdale, Morrisville, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell and Zebulon are on Tuesday November 3!
