New Poll Shows Support for Transit in the Triangle!

The Regional Transportation Alliance (RTA), a Triangle business organization and member of the Capital Area Friends of Transit, released a poll of Triangle voters on March 24 that demonstrates significant support for transit. More than 60% of those polled in Wake, Durham and Orange Counties support a mixture of expanded bus service, light rail and commuter rail to link our communities via mass transit. They also said clearly that a transit system should be regional, rather than just local. The poll also asked voters whether they would support increased taxes to help build a regional transit system. More than 50% said they would agree to a half cent increase in sales tax to be used for transit. According to RTA executive director, Joe Milazzo, this is significant support considering the current economy. Note that the transit legislation being considered by the General Assembly (HB 148/SB 151) includes allowing counties to hold a referendum on a local half cent sales tax increase dedicated to transit.
