Great Schools in Wake News Articles & LTE
5/16/10 Which CMS schools will have to close?
"In a county where just three years ago voters approved a record $516 million to build schools, the prospect of budget-driven closings is a shock. People are already edgy."? http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/05/16/1438577/which-cms-schools-wi...
5/16/10 A serious hassle
"To get to a school board meeting I must hire a sitter, get her a key, find someone to bring home my children from their respective schools, drive to the meeting and find a parking place. So now to attend a meeting I have to get my kids off to school, tell the teacher I can't come in for the Tuesday volunteer time I committed to at the beginning of the year, drive all the way to the school board building and go wait in line hoping I get a ticket."? http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/05/16/482649/a-serious-hassle.html
5/16/10 Unhappy with school board's direction?
"The Wake County school board majority came in claiming they were going to increase student achievement. Dismantling a system with a national reputation and very few high poverty schools is all we have seen so far. There is room for improvement - maybe the current board members should spend some time on how they plan to increase student achievement. This work could begin with the student achievement committee, a committee that has met only once."? http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/05/16/482647/unhappy-with-school-boards...
5/16/10 The?"The loss of a school model that creates a true community of learning for both teachers and students would be a shortsighted mistake, one I hope to never see."? http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/05/16/482644/the.html
5/16/10 Already too divided?
"Please don't resegregate our schools for the sake of a shorter bus ride. We already live separate lives in the same space. In other words, white people and black people ignore each other - that's how we co-exist. Just go shopping and observe the interaction. If this school board is successful, it can only widen the divide that exists between us." http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/05/16/482642/already-too-divided.html
5/16/10 My neighborhood?
"Wake County is my neighborhood. The diversity policy, when fully implemented, provides a foundation for strong schools, an attractive business environment and a thriving community for all. If the board carries through with its plan to end this policy, I fear what achievement data on Wake schools will look like two, five, 10 years from now." http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/05/16/482641/my-neighborhood.html
5/16/10 Trapped?
"If WCPSS does not guarantee that students are assigned to schools that parents choose, then there will be students who cannot escape the substandard education known to occur in high-poverty schools. This is real and forced economic segregation." http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/05/16/482640/trapped.html
